Logan Thibault (Taylor Kitsch) is back in the United States, completing his recovery at the combat stress recovery center. The staff advises him to discuss his experience with someone who can understand it, someone to whom he can unburden himself. He meets up with Jodi (Michelle Monaghan), a fellow patient at the center, who tells him that she lost her husband in Iraq. After talking to Jodi, Logan returns home to reconnect with his pre-deployment friends. He learns that Jodi's husband was killed in combat. Over the next few days, Logan reconnects with his old friends, Matt (Scott Wilson) and Kirsten (Brie Larson), and he gets a job at a bar. Logan feels out of place at home compared to his family, who have been struggling after Logan's father recently lost his job as a result of the recession. Logan realizes that Jodi's husband has been written off as a combat casualty, even though he had actually been wrongfully declared dead by the military. Logan is intent on finding out what exactly happened to him, and he travels to visit Jodi's family, who live in a small town outside of Richmond, Virginia. He also visits the cemetery where Jodi's husband is said to be buried. Logan runs into a fishing-tackle store owner named Beth (Rachel McAdams), with whom he briefly had an affair before leaving for Iraq. She tells Logan that her marriage has fallen apart as a result of her PTSD from seeing his name on the list of casualties. Logan then stops by an off-the-beaten-track tourist store run by Beth's cousin Beau (William Sadler). Logan goes back to Jodi's family home and meets Jodi's mother (Laura Ramsey), who gives Logan a photo of her deceased daughter, which he discovers is the same woman seen in his picture. Logan arrives at the cemetery where Jodi's husband is buried, and reaches out to determine whether he is indeed dead. He finds out that there was a mistake on the missing-person list, and that her husband was long presumed dead before making contact with him. Logan asks for his name to be cleared and writes him a letter.
